Flamborough Head

Places to Visit, Things to Do

Lighthouses and history

Flamborough Head is an interesting place to visit (ideal for photography with sea caves and sea stacks), with its historic landmarks and two lighthouses. At the “modern” lighthouse there is a giftshop and café. The older lighthouse, which is oddly in land, was built in 1674.   The stunning white chalk cliffs provide a focal point for the area, raising up from the choppy sea and providing an ideal destination for both hikers and bird watchers.  Take a short walk (about a mile each way) to North Landing along the cliff tops and explore the beach at North Landing (there’s a café there too!)

The Battle of Flamborough Head

Depending on your point of view, one of the first battles that the US Navy engaged in took place just off the Head Land. Ships commanded by John Paul Jones (the founder of the US Navy) during the War of Independence in 1779 battled two Royal Navy ships. These ships were escorting merchant ships back from Baltics.  There is a small memorial marking the occasion in the main car park.

Puffins ahoy!

Not far from Flamborough Head, is the RSBP centre at Bempton Cliffs . It is a must visit for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast. The cliffs are home to thousands of seabirds; including Puffins, Gannets, Guillemots and Kittiwakes.   There are number of hides and viewing platforms as well as a visitor centre.
