Earth Day 2020

News and Events, Our Journey

It’s Earth Day today.

Here at our home in North Yorkshire we are trying to do our little bit for the environment. These aren’t drastic changes, but they are small changes that will hopefully add up to something bigger.
Washing up liquid – we have started to buy in bulk, and when the current stock of plastic bottles runs out (which we recycle), we will be using glass pump dispensers in our holiday cottages that we can refill.
Buying local – we are supporting local trades and craftsmen by buying local. We have just bought some fantastic crafted wooden bowls to go on display in our cottages from a craftsman in the village. As we pay attention to our garden, we are getting most of our supplies and equipment from Steam and Moorland Garden & Machinery Centre – and even now they continue to provide a great service by delivering supplies to us.
In the garden – as mentioned in previous posts, whilst we do like our straight lines of grass, we aren’t being that neat around the edges in order to create a habitat for wildlife. In another part of the garden we are letting the grass grow as a part of the #bluecampaign, to see what grows in a part of the garden that would otherwise be mowed at least once a week.
Next week will be looking at our cottages and how we can change over to low energy light bulbs.
What are you doing for Earth Day and what ideas do you have that you think we could be trying?  You can find our more about what we are doing here.
Don’t forget we offer self catering holiday rental cottages in the lovely Vale of Pickering, with lots to do on our door steps without you needing to get in the car, whether that’s spending time in our swimming pool, going for a walk in the nearby by Chafer Wood Nature reserve, or taking advantage of the flat of the Vale of Pickering and going for a cycle ride.  (Or you could just hang out and chill in our 2 acres of gardens).  You can check availability here.
