Shopping Local in Malton | Food, Markets and Local Produce Near Cliff House

Places to Visit, Things to Do

Shopping Local in Malton and Bringing It Back to the Orangery at Cliff House

One of the things we often encourage guests to do during their stay at Cliff House is slow down a little and explore the local businesses that make this part of North Yorkshire what it is.

Malton has built a reputation over the years as one of Yorkshire’s best known food towns, but beyond the larger food festivals and headlines, it’s the independent producers, market traders and small shops that really give the town its character.

This weekend’s lunch in the Orangery was built almost entirely from local finds gathered during a relaxed morning in Malton.

We picked up Scotch eggs and pork pies from Food 2 Remember in Talbot Yard, a business well known locally for its pies, sausage rolls and homemade savouries. Talbot Yard itself is worth a wander, with independent food and drink businesses tucked around the courtyard.

Alongside that came cheese from one of the traders on the Malton Saturday Market. Markets like this are one of the easiest ways to discover local produce and talk directly to the people who make or source it. Every week is slightly different, depending on the season and who is trading that day.

Even the serving board had a local connection, having come from one of the makers at the monthly market.

Back at Cliff House, everything was laid out in the Orangery overlooking the gardens. It was one of those quieter moments that often become the memorable part of a holiday. Good food, somewhere comfortable to sit, and time to enjoy it properly.

That is part of what we mean when we talk about “Close to Home, Far from Ordinary”. Not necessarily big attractions or packed itineraries, but the chance to experience North Yorkshire through its local businesses, food producers and market towns.

Malton is only around 25 minutes from Cliff House Holiday Cottages, making it an easy morning trip before returning to enjoy the gardens, woodland and slower pace back here in Ebberston.

If you are planning a stay with us, we are always happy to point guests towards some of our favourite local food spots, markets and independent businesses.  And if you are looking for more inspiration, have a look at things your can do  within 20 minutes of Cliff House.
