PROUD TO BE A
North York Moors National Park Champion
At Cliff House Holiday Cottages, the North York Moors isn’t just somewhere we send our guests for a day out. It’s our home, it’s on our doorstep and it plays a big part in what makes a stay here special.
We’re proud to be recognised as a North York Moors National Park Champion, part of a select group of tourism businesses working closely with the National Park and sharing its aim of helping people enjoy this remarkable place while looking after it for the future.
What does being a National Park Champion mean?
For us, being a Champion isn’t about putting another logo on the website.
It’s about knowing the area, sharing it with our guests and doing our bit to look after it.
We want you to leave Cliff House having discovered a little more of North Yorkshire than you might otherwise have done. That might mean pointing you towards a favourite walk, suggesting somewhere good for lunch, helping you find a less familiar corner of the Moors or encouraging you to look up after dark and discover just how many stars there are above us.
It’s also about recognising that tourism has an impact and making thoughtful choices about how we run Cliff House.
The North York Moors on our doorstep
Cliff House sits in Ebberston, on the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park, making us a great base for exploring both the Moors and the Yorkshire coast.
There are walks from the village and woods directly behind Cliff House, while places such as Dalby Forest, Thornton-le-Dale, Pickering and the wider National Park are all close by.
Head a little further and there are moorland villages, historic abbeys, steam trains, big skies, ancient woodland and miles of walking and cycling to discover.
And if you’re not sure where to start, ask us. We’re always happy to share the places we enjoy ourselves.
Looking after our little corner of North Yorkshire
Some of what we do at Cliff House is very visible. Other things happen in the background, but together they help us reduce our impact and give nature a little more room.
Across our two acres we’ve been allowing parts of the gardens to become less formal, cutting our meadow only once a year and creating areas where insects, birds and other wildlife can thrive.
We’ve restored the pond and created leaky dams in Wishing Well Wood, built dead hedges and bug hotels, and created our Blue Heart area as part of our approach to letting nature find its own space.
We also use refillable soaps, provide EV charging and even use a solar-powered pump to bring water from the beck for parts of the garden.
None of these things changes the holiday we want you to have. They are just part of trying to look after the place we’re lucky enough to call home.
Supporting the people and places around us
Being a National Park Champion is about communities as well as landscapes.
Whenever we can, we encourage our guests to discover the independent businesses around us. From the village pub a few minutes’ walk away to cafés, farm shops, delis, restaurants and small producers across Ryedale and the North York Moors, there is an enormous amount to discover.
You’ll see many of these places appearing on our website and social media because they’re the places we visit ourselves.
Spending locally helps keep those businesses, skills and communities thriving, and it makes for a much more interesting holiday too.
Explore more, tread thoughtfully
The North York Moors National Park encourages visitors to enjoy and look after the landscape in equal measure, and that’s an approach we wholeheartedly support.
Walk it. Cycle it. Photograph it. Watch its wildlife. Sit beneath its dark skies. Eat and drink in its villages. Explore places you’ve never heard of before.
Take your time over it.
And hopefully go home already thinking about what you might discover next time.
Make Cliff House your base for the North York Moors
