Visit Beverley

Places to Visit, Things to Do

We headed for a day trip to Beverley, which is just under an hours drive away from the cottages here at Cliff House Holiday Cottages. Beverley is a fantastic market town in the East Riding of Yorkshire (never call it East Yorkshire!). The town has a collection of many high end shops, but if shopping isn’t your thing there is still plenty to do including visiting the town’s Minster and St Mary’s Church.

St Mary’s, Beverley

St Mary’s in Beverley is very interesting. With two fantastic ceilings, one blue with stars and another with the Kings of old England (mythical and real). In the church there are fantastic carving on the misericords (seats with a lips, so that you could look like you were standing, when in fact you were resting) – these carvings date back over 600 years, but there is a remarkably accurate carving of an elephant – how many of them were there to see in the East Riding back then!

Elsewhere in St Mary’s there is a remarkable exhibition of the busts used to create the latest stone carvings that in 2022 where fixed to the outside of the work during restoration work. All the busts are of women that have contributed to STEM, from Marie Curie to Amy Johnson and Helen Sharman
