Six Reasons to stay at our holiday cottages in Yorkshire

News and Events, Other Bits and Pieces, Places to Eat, Places to Visit, Things to Do

Looking for a reason to stay one of our 5 self catering holiday cottages on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and just 20 minutes from the beaches of Yorkshire?  Look no further….

1. Cliff House is fun

Not only do we have an indoor heated pool, we also have a games room with pool.and table tennis tables. We have 2 acres of grounds, including a walled garden and woodland all at your disposal. There are picnic tables, a great wooden play house with a slide and climbing wall and our very own ancient Yew Tree den to explore. In the garden we have magnifying posts to allow to look at the wild life up close.  In the cottages we provide maps, walking route cards (as we are in #walkshire of course), bird spotting and astronomy guides along with binoculars.

2. Love cycling?

Cliff House is right on the edge of Dalby Forest which offers forest trails and mountain biking routes

  • 13 walking trails (including easy access)
  • 6 cycling trails including the world Cup trail
  • 4 running trails including 5k and 10k routes
  • Visitor Centre (Cake!!!!!)
  • Bike shop and hire

We are also not far from Sutton Bank which offers a range of mountain biking trails as well.

3. We are only 20 minutes away from the North York Moors Railway

Pickering, the southern end of the North York Moors Railway, is just 20 minutes away from Cliff House Holiday Cottages.  The North York Moors Railway (NYMR) runs from Pickering to Goathland (home of “Heartbeat” if you remember that show) and Grosmont.  Occasionally they offer through services all the way to Whitby – which makes a perfect day to trip to the Yorkshire Coast. The NYMR offers variety of special steam services as well, from Santa Specials to Sunday Lunch dining experiences. All passing through the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside.

4. We are on a bus route.

Scarborough, Pickering and the market town of Helmsley  are just a hop-on away on the 128 bus which has a number of bus stops in the village. Take the bus to Thornton-le-Dale and change to a Coastliner bus to get to Castle Howard, Malton, Whitby and the City of York.

5 We are a short drive away from the beach

You can choose from Cayton Bay just 20 minutes or so from our holiday cottages. Cayton Bay is a quiet and unspoilt bay with loos, parking and a small cafe.  The Bay offers some of the county’s best surfing year round, from three key surfing locations. Or go full on for all the attractions at Scarborough, with two beaches, amusement arcades and of course lots of ice cream on offer!  Beyond Cayton and Scarborough, there are the beaches at Filey and Bridlington.  To the north Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay (which has some lovely walks out along the beach and back along the cliff tops) and Ravenscar for a bit of seal spotting.

6. Love great food

Reason 6 to come and stay with us – Love to dine out or eat in – Ryedale has it all.  Close to our self catering holiday cottages we have the Cayley Arms in Allerston and the Coachman in Snainton  – both excellent local pubs serving a great range of cooked to order food.  (We would also recommend the chippy in Snainton for their fish and chips – excellent batter and don’t forget to ask for “scraps”).

If you love your food and are staying with us, then a visit to Malton is in order.  Malton calls itself the “Food Capital of Yorkshire” and with good reason.  Aside from a range of good restaurants, it has a variety of quality food shops – from the butcher and fishmonger “Food 2 Remember” (their aged steak is amazing), macarons and patisserie from Florian Poirot, freshly roasted small batch coffee from Roost and a fine selection of whisky, gin and wine from McMillans of Malton run by father and son team Jim and James.  For eating in we would recommend The New Malton on the edge of the market square (and not far from Jim and James’ shop…)

Food Markets

Most months Malton hosts a food market and in the summer there is a 3 day food festival.  For the more adventurous there is even an annual Marathon du Malton – a 10km race, with plenty of stops for food and alcohol 🙂

If you fancy a special treat, The Star at Harome is a Michelin starred restaurant, is well worth a visit.  It may be 18 miles away, but that is only 30 minutes away along quiet county roads.  Less time than it takes to cover 7 miles in Sheffield in our experience!

Hopefully with these six reasons to stay at Cliff House we have given you a flavour if what you can expect when you book a self catering holiday with us on the edge of North York Moors.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch.
