Ryedale Tour de Abbey

Places to Eat, Places to Visit, Things to Do

Ryedale Tour de Abbey

We went on an impromptu tour around Ryedale today visiting its great Abbey’s and Priory. Before any great trip, one must first get sustenance, so we first headed to the market town of Helmsley where we had breakfast at Mannions of Helmsley. Can’t recommend it enough, great food, cooked to order and great staff too!

After that we headed to Rievaulx Abbey for a quick explore and to visit their exhibition on the use of water at the Abbey (its more interesting than it sounds!), we even saw a genuine stop cock! ????

From there, we headed cross country to the nearby Byland Abbey, which Alastair had visited only a couple of weeks before.  After that, and as our final destination we went to Kirkham Priory. There wasn’t perhaps as much to see as at the other locations, but its setting beside the Derwent and with trains running through it made up for it. The walls of priory were used in the Second World War for training troops to get up and down scramble nets in preparation for embarking landing craft for D-Day!

All in all a grand day out around our local area of Ryedale, which was about 6 hours including all the stops from start to finish.
