Picnic at Alfred’s Cave in Chafer Wood

Things to Do

Recently, for a bit of downtime, we decided to have a delightful picnic at King Alfred’s Cave, a historic tower perched at the top of a hill in the nearby Chafer Wood. This scenic spot is just a 10-minute walk from our cottages, taking you through a serene woodland path that offers a tranquil escape from everyday life.

King Alfred’s Cave isn’t a real cave but a historical monument that commemorates a battle fought around 700 AD by Alfred of Northumbria (not Alfred the Great!). This battle is believed to have taken place near the site of the nearby “Bloody Field” and “Bloody Beck,” which are situated just on the edge of our home village of Ebberston. The area is steeped in rich history, and standing by the monument, you can’t help but feel a connection to the ancient past.

From the vantage point of King Alfred’s Cave, you are treated to breathtaking views across the Vale of Pickering. The expansive landscape stretches out before you, offering glimpses of the rolling countryside and the charming nearby village of Allerston. It’s the perfect spot to take in the natural beauty of North Yorkshire, and the view alone is worth the short hike.

For our picnic, we opted to order a picnic hamper from “Made in Olstead,” a renowned local provider known for their fantastic selection of local produce. The hamper was a feast for the senses, filled with a variety of delicious items that perfectly complemented the beautiful surroundings. From artisanal cheeses and freshly baked bread to hand made chocolates, every item was a testament to the quality and richness of local Yorkshire fare.

To complete our picnic, we enjoyed some fantastic wines and craft beers, all included in the hamper. The combination of great food, drink, and the stunning views made for an unforgettable experience. We thoroughly recommend trying a picnic hamper from “Made in Olstead” if you’re looking for a unique and enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.

Overall, our picnic at King Alfred’s Cave was a perfect way to unwind and connect with the history and beauty of the area. It’s a highly recommended activity for anyone staying at our cottages, offering both a peaceful retreat and a glimpse into the storied past of North Yorkshire.Β  For more holiday inspiration, have a look at our Things to Do page.
