Land of Iron

Things to Do, Walking

The Land of Iron

Went for a walk in the “Land of Iron” – Rosedale in the North York Moors National Park. To look at it now you wouldn’t think that it was once a thriving iron ore community, with the hill sides dotted with mines as well as the giant furnaces used for extracting the iron. For the walker, there’s the bonus of being able to walk along the track bed of the railway that serviced the mines and furnaces. Once you gain height after leaving the village of Rosedale Abbey you are on the track bed all the way round on this 12 miles walk – which can also be a bit of a disadvantage as you can see on the other side of the dale, where you will be walking in about 3 hours time!  Throughout the walk you can see clues as to the use of the valley for mining, from bits of old buildings, spoil heaps to the inclines for transport the ore out of the Land of Iron and on to the rail network.
