A Scenic Walk from Saltergate Car Park to Skelton Tower and Beyond

One of the most peaceful and rewarding walks in the North York Moors National Park starts at Saltergate Car Park, just a short drive from Cliff House Holiday Cottages. This circular route offers stunning views, a glimpse into local history, and even the chance to experience the sounds of steam trains rumbling through the countryside.

Starting the Journey: Saltergate Car Park to Skelton Tower

From Saltergate, you begin by heading towards Skelton Tower, perched on the edge of Newton Dale. This old hunting lodge offers panoramic views of the valley below, where you can often hear or see the trains of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway as they make their way through the landscape. It’s the perfect spot for a quiet moment, appreciating the vastness of the moors and the sound of nature all around.

Down to Levisham Station

From Skelton Tower, the walk continues downward to Levisham Station. As you descend, the noise of the steam trains gets closer, adding a nostalgic soundtrack to your hike. Levisham Station is a beautifully preserved heritage stop, offering a throwback to a time when train travel was slower and more personal. The setting feels almost timeless, a place where you can pause, take in the stillness, and maybe even hop on a train for a brief journey along the moors.

The inn’s warm atmosphere, combined with its great selection of local ales, makes it a highlight of the day.
