Exploring Robin Hood’s Bay: A Perfect Day Trip from Cliff House Holiday Cottages

At Cliff House Holiday Cottages, we’re always eager to recommend hidden gems and local treasures to our guests, and one of our absolute favourites is Robin Hood’s Bay. Though we don’t get to visit as often as we’d like, this charming seaside village is only about a 46-minute drive from our holiday cottages, making it an ideal destination for a day trip during your stay.

Discovering the Charm of Robin Hood’s Bay

Robin Hood’s Bay is a picturesque village that offers a delightful blend of natural beauty, rich history, and seaside charm. As you arrive, you’ll be greeted by stunning views of a big open beach, where the sands are mixed with pebbles, offering an inviting playground for beachcombers and fossil hunters alike. This beach is particularly renowned for its fossil-rich cliffs, so don’t forget to bring your bucket and spade—you might just uncover a piece of ancient history!

The village itself is a joy to explore, with its narrow, winding streets that speak to a bygone era. Robin Hood’s Bay has a fascinating history, particularly as a former hotspot for smuggling in the 18th century. As you walk through the village, it’s easy to imagine the secretive exchanges and hidden goods that once passed through these now-quaint streets.

A Taste of Local Flavour

No visit to Robin Hood’s Bay is complete without sampling the local fare, and we have a couple of must-visit spots that we simply adore. One of our top recommendations is Brambles Bistro, conveniently located near “The Dock” at the bottom of the village. This family-run bistro is known for its cosy atmosphere and commitment to using locally sourced ingredients. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty lunch or just a light snack, Brambles Bistro won’t disappoint. Their coffee, made with beans from The Baytown Coffee Company, is a particular highlight—rich, smooth, and the perfect pick-me-up after a morning of exploring.

Fun for All Ages

After you’ve satisfied your appetite, take some time to potter around the rock pools at low tide. These pools are teeming with marine life, and children especially will love the chance to spot crabs, starfish, and other sea creatures. It’s a simple, wholesome way to spend an afternoon, and a great way to introduce the little ones to the wonders of nature.

Before heading back to Cliff House, make sure to stop by Dollies Sweet Shop for a treat. This traditional sweet shop is a hit with visitors of all ages, offering a delightful selection of sweets and ice cream. It’s the perfect way to round off a day of seaside adventures.
