Yesterday, while we were in Scarborough, we called into @oldparcelsofficeartspace , tucked away at the end of the railway station car park and just a short walk from @thesjt

The main gallery is currently home to Wonders of the Wild, a colourful exhibition co-created by six local artists working with six community groups. Using recycled materials, they have produced large-scale sculptures of plants and animals inspired by wildlife, the coast and natural environments from further afield.

In the neighbouring space, we also found a small exhibition of wildlife photography, making the visit even more worthwhile.

The Old Parcels Office is a fantastic arts venue and one that could easily be missed unless you know it is there. Wonders of the Wild runs until 9 August, open Thursday to Sunday from 11am to 4pm, and admission is free.

Well worth seeking out during your next visit to Scarborough.

An impromptu light lunch in Scarborough yesterday

An impromptu light lunch in Scarborough yesterday took us to Crema e Cioccolato on Newborough.

We usually think of Crema e Cioccolato for excellent coffee and handmade Italian gelato, but their lunchtime food is well worth discovering too. We shared a generous platter of Italian meats, cheeses and accompaniments, which was just right for a relaxed Sunday lunch.

Another great independent Scarborough business and somewhere we are always happy to return to.

Scarborough’s Old Town was full of life today for the Scarborough Coble Market, organised by @this_isscarborough

There was a great mix of buskers, gallery spaces and market stalls to explore, with everything from art, crafts and vintage finds to food, antiques and a vinyl record fair. It is a welcome addition to Scarborough’s calendar, bringing local artists, makers, musicians and independent traders together around St Helen’s Square and the Market Hall.

Alastair may also have dipped his toe back into the world of vinyl, coming home with records by Jeff Buckley, John Martyn and, whisper it, Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds… :D

The next Coble Market takes place on Sunday 9 August, so it is well worth adding to your plans for a day in Scarborough.

Seeing this wonderfully dressed couple in Scarborough today reminded us that the town will be putting on its Sunday best again on 6 September.

As part of the Scarborough 400 celebrations, the Sunday Best Parade invites participants to dress in Victorian or Edwardian style and recreate the elegance of a traditional seaside promenade. The procession gathers outside Beeforth’s Hive at 11am, travels through @southcliffgardens s and finishes at @scarborough_spa , with a group photograph planned in the Italian Gardens along the way. Advance registration is essential.

It should be quite a sight and another lovely celebration of Scarborough’s history.

A small change that has made a real difference.

We now use refillable hand soap and washing-up liquid throughout our cottages, helping us cut down on single-use plastic and avoid unnecessary waste.

We used to leave individual guest soaps beside every sink, but even when only partly used they had to be replaced between stays. Refillable bottles mean guests still have fresh soap ready to use, without so much being thrown away.

It is one of the practical changes we have made behind the scenes to reduce waste at Cliff House, while keeping the cottages welcoming and well prepared for every arrival.

When did you last send a postcard?

We spend so much time sharing photographs, messages and holiday moments online that it can be good to step away from social media for a while and make a more personal connection.

We’re adding a selection of complimentary postcards to our cottages, along with a pencil, so guests can sit down, write a few words and send a piece of their North Yorkshire holiday to someone back home.

You might write about a day beside the sea, a walk across the Moors, feeding the chickens, swimming in the pool, or simply having time together at Cliff House.

Once your card is written, the post box is just across the road from us, so it is easy to send it on its way.
