A winter beach walk from Whitby to Sandsend
A stretch of coast that works in every season, the walk along the beach from Whitby to Sandsend is one we return to time and again. This time, it felt especially well suited to the days between Christmas and New Year, when fresh air and movement are very welcome.
At this time of year the beach is fully dog friendly, which makes the route particularly appealing. There is no need to check the clock or watch for signage. Dogs can run freely along wide sands, paddling at the water’s edge or simply charging up and down the shoreline. For owners, it is an easy walk that allows you to settle into a steady pace and take in the changing light and sea conditions.
Setting off from Whitby, the town soon drops away behind you. The beach opens out, backed by low cliffs and sea defences, with Sandsend gradually coming into view ahead. The walk is level underfoot and can be adapted to the tide, either sticking close to the water or keeping higher up the beach when needed. It is an out and back route, which makes it flexible depending on energy levels, weather and daylight.
Winter adds something special to this stretch of coast. The air feels sharper, the skies often wider, and the beach noticeably calmer than during the summer months. There is space to walk side by side, to stop and look back towards Whitby, or to pause at Sandsend before turning back. It is the kind of walk that clears the head without feeling like an effort.
For guests staying at Cliff House Holiday Cottages, days like this are part of what makes a winter break worthwhile. Being based inland means you can enjoy open countryside and woodland walks closer to home, then head to the coast for a longer beach walk when the mood takes you. Afterwards, it is back to warmth, tea on the go, and the comfort of having properly earned it.
A good coastal walk, dog friendly sands and a chance to blow away the Twixmas cobwebs. Sometimes that is all you need.
