The Route
1. Begin Your Journey
Your adventure starts at Cliff House Holiday Cottages, where you can step out of your door and onto the trail. From the very start, you’ll feel the peace of the countryside as you leave behind the comforts of the cottages and head toward the North York Moors National Park.
2. The Edge of the Moors
The route takes you to the edge of the North York Moors, where wide-open spaces and breathtaking views await. Here, you’ll experience the raw beauty of Yorkshire’s heather-clad hills, with plenty of opportunities to pause, take photos, and breathe in the fresh air.
3. Through Dalby Forest
The walk then weaves its way through Dalby Forest, a tranquil haven of towering trees, wildlife, and peaceful paths. The forest track provides a shaded contrast to the moorland and is an excellent spot for a break or a quiet moment to reconnect with nature.
4. The Village of Allerston
Exiting Dalby Forest, you’ll arrive in the quaint village of Allerston. Take a moment to appreciate its charm and local character as you continue on your way.
5. Bloody Beck and Bloody Field
From Allerston, the walk crosses the intriguingly named Bloody Beck and climbs the slopes of Bloody Field. Local legend has it that King Alfred of Northumbria fought his final battle near here in 708 AD. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply enjoy a good story, this part of the walk adds a sense of connection to the area’s past.
6. The Final Stretch
The loop brings you back toward Cliff House, where you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment as you step into the village.
The Reward
No walk is complete without a well-earned treat, and ours ends with a visit to our local village pub – The Grapes —just a three-minute walk from Cliff House. A refreshing pint and a plate of chips by the fire or in the beer garden (weather permitting) is the perfect way to cap off your adventure.
