Keeping It Local – How Every Tenner Counts
We had a wander around Malton yesterday — always a favourite trip for a mix of good food, friendly faces, and proper Yorkshire character. This time we noticed something special: Malton and Norton are taking part in the “Totally Locally Magic Tenner” campaign, a brilliant initiative designed to show how small actions can have a big impact on our local economy.
In Cosy Cottage, one of the many independent businesses taking part, we learned that through their work they support 32 other local businesses. From suppliers to stockists, every pound spent with them stays in Yorkshire that little bit longer — helping other makers, growers and craftspeople to thrive.
It got us thinking about our own role here at Cliff House Holiday Cottages. When we sat down to count, we realised we support at least 20 local businesses — and probably many more if we thought harder about it.
That includes:
-
Local tradespeople and builders who help maintain our cottages.
-
Local food producers whose bread find their way into our welcome packs.
-
Local butchers, bakers and farm shops we recommend to guests.
-
Local cleaning teams, gardeners, and waste services.
-
Local printers, designers, and even the photographers who help us tell the story of our place.
Every time a guest books direct with us, buys a coffee in a local café, or picks up handmade soap from Cosy Cottage, they’re keeping money in the community. It’s a simple idea — but it makes a real difference. According to the team behind Totally Locally, when you spend £10 with a local independent business, up to £50 can stay in the local economy through wages, suppliers and other spending.
That’s what “Totally Locally” is all about — and it’s what we love most about living and working here on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. It’s not just about cottages or holidays; it’s about community, connection, and helping the places we love to keep thriving.
So, next time you visit North Yorkshire — whether it’s for a long weekend or a family getaway — buy local, stay local, and help keep this corner of Yorkshire special.
