Recognition That Reflects Our Values
We’ve recently been awarded a 76% score in the Good Travel Scan – a sustainability and responsibility assessment carried out by the Good Travel Seal and Green Destinations. We’re proud of the result, not because we’ve reached a finish line, but because it reflects the direction we’re heading in.
This isn’t an application we made lightly. The process reviews how we care for our team, our guests, our environment, and our local community. It looks at everything from how we manage waste to how we support local culture – even how we share information with guests.
Where We Did Well
We’re especially pleased to have scored:
✔️ 100% for how we manage our business and communicate with guests
✔️ 100% for supporting local food and products
✔️ 79% for fair and good employment practices
✔️ 75% across areas like nature, culture, water and climate care
These aren’t just tick-boxes – they represent real, day-to-day actions: growing meadow gardens for wildlife, making jam from fruit grown in the garden, and helping guests connect with the North York Moors in a way that leaves a light footprint.
Where We Can Do Better
We’re also honest enough to say there are areas we want to improve. Reducing pollution and improving how we track things like water use and emissions are next on our list. As a small, family-run business, progress happens slowly – but it happens.
What It Means For You as a Guest
For our guests, it means you’re staying somewhere that tries to do things right – quietly and thoughtfully. It means your holiday is part of a more sustainable tourism approach, even if you’re just here for the jam and the chickens.
Final Thoughts
We’re grateful for the recognition – and even more grateful for the reminder that running a holiday business is as much about care as it is about comfort. If you want to read more about the programme, you’ll find it at www.goodtravel.guide.
And if you’d like to come and stay somewhere that’s trying to do things right – without making a song and dance about it – we’d love to welcome you to Cliff House.
