Cayton Bay, with its big beach and views across to the old town area of Scarborough, is 12 miles and just over 20 mins drive away from our self catering holiday cottages. The large beach at Cayton is perfect for letting the dog off the lead and for kite flying amongst other things – including of course sand castles. There is a surf shop and car park on the cliff tops above the bay. If you are parking on the verge and avoiding paying for the car park, be sure to avoid parking near the double yellow lines – even if you are off the road we have seen cars being ticketed.
At beach level there is a small cafe offering bacon rolls and hot drinks as well buckets and spades in case you forgot to bring your own. 🙂
Of additional interest, when visiting Cayton Bay, may be the World War II pill boxes that started their life at the top of the cliffs, but through coastal erosion have found their way down on to the beach.
Cayton Bay is also one of the final places on the Cleveland Way national trial walking route before you get to Filey. The Cleveland Way tracks a route from Helmsley across the North York Moors before hitting the coast up in Saltburn upon Sea, and then following the Yorkshire Coast down all the way to Filey. There is potential for a giant circular walk, by linking up with Tabular Hills Trail, which links Scarborough with Helmsley.
