Eden Camp Museum Near Malton | Things To Do in North Yorkshire

Places to Visit, Things to Do

Eden Camp Museum: One of the Most Thought-Provoking Things to Do Near Malton

If you are looking for things to do in North Yorkshire that go beyond the usual seaside arcades, castles and steam trains, then a visit to Eden Camp Modern History Museum offers something very different.

Located just outside Malton and within easy reach of Cliff House Holiday Cottages, Eden Camp is one of those attractions that stays with you long after you leave. Set within an original World War Two prisoner of war camp, the museum combines history, storytelling and immersive displays in a way that appeals to adults, children and grandparents alike.

It is also one of the easiest days out to combine with a stay at Cliff House Holiday Cottages thanks to its location near the A169, making it ideal for families exploring Ryedale, the North York Moors and the Yorkshire coast.

A Real World War Two Prisoner of War Camp

Unlike many museums that recreate history in modern buildings, Eden Camp is the real thing.

The site began life in 1942 as a prisoner of war camp, initially housing Italian prisoners before later being used for German POWs. Many of the original huts remain in place today and now contain immersive exhibitions covering life during wartime Britain.

Walking between the huts feels very different from a conventional museum visit. The atmosphere changes from hut to hut, covering everything from rationing and evacuation through to The Blitz, propaganda, the Home Front and post-war conflicts.

Some areas are reflective and emotional. Others are genuinely fascinating for children who are seeing this period of history brought to life for the first time.

The Sights, Sounds and Smells of Wartime Britain

One of the things Eden Camp does particularly well is immersion.

Rather than simply displaying objects in glass cabinets, many exhibits recreate scenes from wartime Britain using sound, lighting, reconstructed streets and detailed tableaux.

You hear air raid sirens.
You walk through blackout conditions.
You see recreated shops, shelters and military scenes.
There are even smells worked into some exhibits to recreate the atmosphere of the 1940s.

For many visitors, this makes history far more accessible than reading information boards alone.

A Good Family Day Out in North Yorkshire

Although the subject matter is serious, Eden Camp works surprisingly well as a family attraction.

Older visitors often connect with stories passed down through parents and grandparents, while children are drawn into the visual and interactive nature of the exhibits.

The museum recommends allowing at least three to four hours for a visit, and there is plenty of outdoor space between the huts to break things up for younger visitors.

There are also play areas, a café and regular living history events throughout the season.

Importantly for many guests staying with us at Cliff House Holiday Cottages, Eden Camp is also dog friendly.

Perfectly Placed for a Day Exploring Ryedale

One of the reasons we often recommend Eden Camp to guests is because it fits naturally into a wider day exploring the area.

You could combine it with:

  • A visit to Malton and its independent food shops and market
  • A journey on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway
  • Exploring Pickering and the southern edge of the North York Moors
  • A drive across the moors towards Whitby
  • Lunch or coffee in one of the nearby villages

From Cliff House Holiday Cottages, it is comfortably reachable as part of our wider “Things To Do Within 20 Minutes” collection of local attractions.

History That Feels Relevant

Perhaps the most striking thing about Eden Camp is that it does not feel distant or abstract.

The museum focuses heavily on ordinary life during extraordinary times. Food shortages, uncertainty, evacuation, propaganda, resilience and community all run through the exhibits.

That makes it feel surprisingly relevant today.

Rather than glorifying conflict, Eden Camp focuses on people and lived experience, which is probably why it appeals to such a wide age range.
