Yorkshire Great and Small with Dan and Helen – Exploring the North York Moors
The new season of Yorkshire Great and Small with Dan and Helen has begun, and Episode 1 took viewers across some fascinating locations in and around the North York Moors National Park. It’s always interesting to see the places we know so well through the eyes of others, and this episode gave a wonderful cross-section of heritage, landscape and community life.
Great Ayton – The Early Years of Captain Cook
The journey began in the village of Great Ayton, where Captain James Cook lived from the age of eight. His boyhood home still stands, and the village remains closely associated with his story. For anyone with an interest in maritime history, it’s a good starting point for exploring the area.
Roseberry Topping – A Photographer’s Favourite
From there, Dan and Helen cycled to Roseberry Topping, one of the most distinctive landmarks in North Yorkshire. Its sharp profile has made it a popular subject for photographers such as Joe Cornish, and it’s a rewarding climb for walkers too. On a clear day, the views stretch right across the moors and beyond.
Stemfrey Farm and The Wainstones
The programme then split. Dan visited Stemfrey Farm, while Helen headed to the Wainstones, a dramatic cluster of sandstone crags. Popular with walkers and climbers, the Wainstones also carry layers of history, with evidence of ancient settlements in the area.
Mount Grace Priory – A Place of Quiet Reflection
Reuniting, Dan and Helen explored Mount Grace Priory on the western edge of the National Park. Founded in 1398, it was one of the last monasteries built in Yorkshire before the Dissolution. The ruins today sit within peaceful gardens, managed by the National Trust and English Heritage, offering a glimpse into monastic life.
Thirsk – Home of James Herriot
The episode ended in Thirsk, the market town forever linked to James Alfred Wight, better known as James Herriot. Visitors today can explore his former surgery, now “The World of James Herriot”, which brings to life the stories that inspired All Creatures Great and Small.
Staying at Cliff House Holiday Cottages
All of these locations are within reach of Cliff House Holiday Cottages here in Ebberston. That’s one of the advantages of our spot on the southern edge of the National Park — whether you want moorland climbs, market town charm, or historical landmarks, you’re never far away. And after a day exploring, you can return to our cottages, our indoor pool, and two acres of gardens to relax and reflect.
