COUNTRY WALKS FROM CLIFF HOUSE
Being on the edge of the North York Moors and also being near the Yorkshire Coast, Cliff House is well situated for those that love walking.
In each of our cottages we provide for you to borrow the local Ordnance Survey map, a pack of walking route cards for longer walks in the county and in our family sized cottages a set of route cards and activities for our younger guests. In addition to that, we also have binoculars and birding guides as well so that you can make the best use of your time at Cliff House. For those that want to spend a day at Cliff House, whether that’s spending time in the pool or enjoying the grounds there are a number of shorter walks that you can do direct from the cottages that vary in length – most perfect for an after dinner stroll. Have a look at ever growing selection of walks below.
The Country Code
The Country Code was originally developed in the 1930 in the UK, and still is a good set of guidance to follow when venturing out in to the countryside.
- Enjoy the countryside and respect its life and work
- Guard against all risk of fire
- Leave all gates as you found them
- Keep your pets under close control
- Keep to public paths across farmland
- Use gates and stiles to cross fences, hedges and walls
- Leave livestock, crops and machinery alone
- Take your litter home
- Help to keep all water clean
- Protect wildlife, plants and trees
- Take special care on country roads
- Make no unnecessary noise
The more recent Countryside Code, and its more up to date versions can be found here.
WALKING FROM CLIFF HOUSE
Forge Valley and Hackness Walk
We went for the first long walk in a long time, nearly 10 miles, starting and finishing in the local village of East Ayton. We walked up Forge Valley, which was carved out by the melt waters from the last ice age and is the valley through which the River Derwent flows...
Land of Iron
The Land of Iron Went for a walk in the "Land of Iron" - Rosedale in the North York Moors National Park. To look at it now you wouldn't think that it was once a thriving iron ore community, with the hill sides dotted with mines as well as the giant furnaces used for...

A Walk Through Thornton Dale
This circular walk is about 6km long and can take between 1.5hrs to 2 hours depending on your pace and how many stops you make (or more if you take your cameras with you). This walk is entirely on the flat with little if no height gain. It is on well prepared paths...
